Fire Extinguishers: Are You Ready for When You Need Them?
Most businesses have fire extinguishers. They are usually mounted where they should be, clearly visible and ready to grab if something goes wrong.
But when was the last time you actually checked them?
And more importantly, are you confident they would work if you needed them?
It is easy to take fire extinguishers for granted. They can sit quietly on a wall for years without being touched, which can make it tempting to think that because they haven't been used, they don't need attention.
That isn't the case.
Fire extinguishers are part of your fire safety arrangements
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the person responsible for fire safety in a workplace has a duty to ensure that fire safety equipment is maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair.
That means fire extinguishers shouldn't simply be provided and forgotten about. They need to form part of your wider fire safety planning and maintenance arrangements.
There are some simple questions worth asking:
Are all of your extinguishers still where they should be?
Are any damaged, corroded or showing signs of deterioration?
Have any been used, even partially?
Are the service records up to date?
Are the extinguishers still suitable for the risks within your premises?
Who is responsible for checking and maintaining them?
If you're not sure about the answers, it may be time to have them professionally inspected.
Don't wait until there is a fire
Fire safety is about being prepared before something happens.
The same applies to your evacuation arrangements, emergency lighting, fire alarms and other fire safety equipment. Each element needs to work together as part of a properly managed fire safety plan.
Fire extinguishers are no different.
I now provide fire extinguisher inspection and servicing for businesses and organisations, helping you make sure your equipment is properly maintained and ready for use when it matters.
You can find out more about what is involved in a professional inspection and servicing visit on my Fire Extinguisher Servicing page.
